Preliminary readership profile

A readership profile is an important part of of magazine. This means that there must be a set target audience and so the style of the magazine must appeal to certain age groups so that it can draw the reader in. Without knowing who your target audience are you cannot deicide on a certain style on the magazine as you wouldn't know what aspects would attract the reader.

For a 6th form magazine it is important to get the age range right, this is because when writing for 15-18 year old's it is important to use more sophisticated language. A 6th form magazine must defiantly be aimed for 16-18 year old's but also 15 year old pupils who would be having 6th form in mind. This is so that the younger pupils get an insight into what 6th form life is like and in addition, so they can prepare themselves for what is ahead of them. This means that this type of magazine should be detailed with the appropriate information including things like interests. When designing the magazine, gender is also an important thing. The idea of a unisex magazine is ideal for 6th form magazine. This means that it will be and look appealing for both male and females. Together with gender, personalities are critical too. This means the magazine must focus on social interests and other interests in 6th form.  For example these can be things like art and sports etc. However, linking back with gender, it must appeal to both male and females.

When consulting a target audience of 16 year old's, they came up with a few ideas in what they expect from a 6th form magazine. These include-
  • All important information about 6th form and tips for arising students.
  • Comments from teachers to help you succeed.
  • An exciting and useful magazine which will give good advice and help you to use your time wisely.
  • A magazine which has some fun in too and not all about work.
